What contributes to back pain, neck pain and headaches? What are the benefits of chiropractic care for these symptoms? And can’t any Austin Chiropractor provide me with chiropractic adjustments to help alleviate these symptoms? In the text and video below, long-time Austin Chiropractor Dr. Jeff Echols explains what can cause back pain, neck pain and headaches or migraines.

The nervous system refers to the brain and all the nerves that are in the body. The brain sits at the top of the spinal cord, and that cord goes down through the spine. It’s inside the spine and it goes all the way down to about the top of the lower back. Nerves extend out from the spine and are like extensions off of the brain. The brain sends signals through the spinal cord down, through the spine, and branch off to every cell and all tissue and - most importantly - to every organ in the body. Now as long as the brain can communicate with these organs through the nerves, there can be good health.

But if the spine is out of its normal alignment, it would put pressure on one or more of these nerves. So if there is a misaligned vertebra, or subluxation, the nerve from that vertebrae will be pinched and it will block the signal coming off that nerve and headaches, back pain, or neck pain can result from that. One can also start to develop allergies or sinus issues because their sinuses aren’t being innervated (supplied by nerves) properly by those nerves.

Down the spine a little bit further into the base of the neck are nerves that go to the thyroid gland. And somebody who has received a blow to the neck or has been involved in an automobile accident can often have damage to the nerves that go to the thyroid and the person can start to develop thyroid disorders, like hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. They will probably also suffer from neck pain and/or headaches, and problems in the cervical spine can cause back pain. Down the spine a little bit further, we encounter the nerves that innervate the lungs and the heart and when there is a pinched nerve in that area, a person may develop breathing difficulties such as asthma, or heart problems such as heart palpitations, murmurs, etc.

In the thoracic portion of the spine, we find the nerves controlling the stomach. Many of my patients who had terrible heart burn and reflux were suffering from a subluxation or pinched nerve in this part of the spine. Once we took that pressure off the nerve, the nerve flow is restored back to the stomach and it can function properly. People may also suffer from mild to severe back pain from a subluxation in the thoracic spine.

As you can probably tell, fixing back problems, back pain, neck pain and headaches is only a very, very small portion of what an Austin chiropractor does. I’m entrusted with keeping your nervous system functioning at as close to 100% as I can. And your nervous system is what controls your whole body and it’s what controls your immune system. So keeping your spine in alignment keeps you from suffering back pain, neck pain and headaches as well as contributing to your overall health and wellness!
